Looks like the car that all of the commentariat could not stop talking about a few weeks ago just ran over everyone's fucking dog. People are !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! that Ford would charge $400K for a halo car that they will only be producing 250 of each year.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Back in January every single post about the North American International Auto Show was replied to with pictures of the Ford GT.

Post about the new NSX? I am sure it will be met with a Ford GT picture, "Wow you messed up bad Acura!"

Post about anything else in Detroit that week was met by the obligatory GT picture and comments about "not listening lalalalalala Ford GT!"

Now there are people counting the numbers of Vipers and Corvettes that could be had for the price of a lone GT. Well guess what - !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Car blog accounting, where the primary currency is Ford Mustangs, has been turned on its head - suddenly Dodge and GM fans are lining up to figure out the exchange rate and let you know what you could buy for the cost of a new Ford GT.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

What if the price were set close to the same as it was back in 2005? Accounting for inflation it would make the MSRP on the new GT a little under $180,000. I bet that the outrage would be almost nonexistent. I am also fairly certain that people who purchased the last Ford GT are very likely to acquire the new iteration of the old classic, as well, even with the increase in price. People who spend six figure sums on automobiles have a different decision making process than a lot of folks out here in Oppo/Jalopnik land. A limited production vehicle, designed and made by an American marquee, with the pedigree and history of the GT?!? The initial run of 250 will be sold out immediately. If I had those sorts of means I would be doing everything I could to get my name on that list of 250.

As for the performance side, there is no way in hell Ford would release this car in any sort of half baked way. They know what they have with the Ford GT and would be absolutely crazy to release something that would tarnish the image that they have carefully cultivated over some 50+ years.

I'm curious to see how well it does. I assumed this would be a volume car in the guise of a R8 competitor so the news of limited production was unexpected. Also I would love to know what they bench marked it against regarding performance.

I was expecting $200k, but with only 250 examples a year I'm sure they will still sell every one. Just look what happens to the other exotics costing that much. Ferarri sells evey car they can make.

I don't see any outrage that Koenigsegg just released an almost $2 million car. Oh wait, that's because it's European. An American hypercar can never be priced in line with its competition. It must always be at least 1/3 the price.

I really don't care, I'm not getting one

No, that's because Koenigsegg always have done 2 million cars. Ford always have been a mass producer company, so the fact that they just launched a 400k car is a outrage. Also, the fact that it cost more than twice than the old GT doesn't help at all

Also, it's competition is the Audi R8, Ferrari 488 GTB, McLaren 650S and the NSX. The GT is, by a huge margain, the most expensive of them

At that price and production numbers, this car will be more of an investment item than a performance car. Theres probably more Veyrons out there and there will be GTs.

I'm curious about those benchmarks, as well. The people in charge at Ford are a smart group, and I am assuming they priced it accordingly.

I was guessing $300K, but even at 400 I bet they have absolutely no problem selling all of them in short order.

Meh... whiners will whine. At only 250 units/year of production, they'll have no problem selling all of the first batch. The only question is for how many years will they produce 250/year selling for $400K.

Though I love this car, I still think Ford is wasting their time have their priorities backward.

I would prefer if they instead made an ultra luxury 250 unit/year flagship Lincoln... and call it the L series (first car made by Lincoln) or K series (which were the really ostentatious Lincolns from the 1930s with V8 and V12 engines).

Lincoln needs the image boost way more than Ford does.

You're missing the point. What makes it okay for Koenigsegg to make cars for millions of dollars just because "they always have?" The GT has a far more significant history and racing prestige than Koenigsegg. The GT is almost exclusively carbon fiber, has active aero, a race-bred engine, and all the other marks to make it a supercar. Add to this the limited 250 units a year and I can't possibly see why people can't justify the price.

The GT will have more (or about equal in the case of the 488) horsepower and most likely a significantly loweelr weight. I don't think the GT is made to directly compete with cars like an R8. But once again, people are missing the point. The Ford GT isn't a Corvette. It's not about how much performance per dollar. It's an extremely exclusive supercar with a rich history. You're paying for that.

Agreed on the Lincoln front completely.

I can see them doing some special edition GT's - they have that new flat plane crank motor that was getting all that press not to far back...

It cost more than twice the price of the old GT

The GT don't have 600 horsepower? That's less than all the other cars it will compete with. The Ford will be an amazing car, that I don't doubt, but with that price, will it be Aventador/F12 Berlinetta level of amazing? That I don't really belive

And the old GT really isn't comparable in any way other than being a RWD performance car. Completely different.

The GT is stated to have "over 600 hp" so that realistically puts it at maybe 610 to 640 max but it's too early to tell. The important thing to note is that its construction is almost exclusively carbon fiber. That puts the weight almost certainly under 3000 lbs. Ford claims "one of the best power to weight ratios of any production car." Will it have Aventador performance. Certainly. The time around the Top Gear test track is only 3 seconds faster than a base C7 and around other tracks it's slower than the ZR1 and 911 GT2/3 RS which the GT should have no problems competing with. Will it have F12 Berlinetta performance? Haha, obviously. The F12 is a GT car. Motortrend already (embarrassingly) showed that even the base 460 hp C7 can hang with (and beat) the F12 on track.
